Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc.(ADS) has a long history using volunteers. ADS came into existence in January of 1983, started by five families who saw a need and, as you know, the rest is history! Before Grashot Center, now Kennedy Park, opened in 1988, the organization was located in a house in Midtown Memphis and operated primarily by volunteers.
Volunteers prove a cornerstone of ADS and we are grateful for the amazing individuals who give their time to make life better for those suffering with dementia as well as for the caregivers and families.
Some of the personal benefits for volunteering include: receiving specific training and education on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, providing an opportunity for personal and professional growth, developing a new friendship that improves the quality of life of a person with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, and gaining a sense of achievement and feeling of giving back to the your community.
ADS can always use volunteers, whether you are a handy man or just a loving person who wants to share your time. Volunteers and “Friends”, routinely stroll in the gardens, reminisce about times gone by and share special friendships.
Volunteers augment staffing, which has a ratio of 1:4. Volunteers sometimes help with clerical or kitchen chores, just to name a few. Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc. would love to have you as a member of our special family of volunteers.
There is not just one way to volunteer! Below is an overview of the many ways people can share their time, talent, and energy with the organization:
Are you a good listener and able to hold a conversation? Visit one of the centers regularly to be a “Friend’s”“Best Friend” and make someone’s day a little brighter.
If you enjoy planning a party, join a committee for one of the fundraisers we host each year like our Trivia Night and more.
Bring your green thumb to one of the centers and help plant in the gardens. Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc. can always use help in maintaining its garden areas for our “Friends” to enjoy.
In addition to these opportunities, we enjoy one-time and regular group visits throughout the year! If you have any questions, please call 901-372-4585 or e-mail info@adsmemphis.org.
